Saved money on my trip

I was looking for the cheapest option to get from London to Bournemouth. I found an Advance ticket for a good price, much better than the Anytime fares. Using my 16-25 Railcard on top saved me a decent chunk, about a third off. Felt like I got a good deal overall for the journey.

Decent service, a bit late

I booked an Off-Peak ticket to Southampton. The booking process online was smooth, no booking fees which was nice. The train itself was clean enough and I managed to reserve a seat, which was good. However, we arrived about 15 minutes late, which was a bit annoying as I had a connection. Still, the price was reasonable for what I paid.

Reliable as usual for my commute

I've been buying my Monthly Season Tickets from South Western Railway for years now. This latest renewal was as straightforward as always on their website. I use a Smartcard, so it's just a top-up really. Trains are generally on time for my commute, maybe a few minutes late sometimes but nothing major. They're consistent, which is why I keep coming back.

Does SWR usually have discount codes? Or is it mostly just the railcard stuff?

T Tom 1 month ago
Mostly railcards and advance booking. I've only ever seen actual promo codes pop up for SWR Rewards members sometimes, but they're not super common.

T Troy 1 month ago
Yeah, what they said. It's usually the railcard discount that's the big one. Occasionally they might email a code if you're signed up for their rewards, but don't count on it for regular savings.

I'm thinking of travelling from Waterloo to Exeter. Is SWR better than GWR for that route, like are the trains nicer or more reliable?

S Shane T. 1 month ago
SWR is generally okay, but GWR probably covers Exeter more directly from London Paddington. For Waterloo to Exeter, SWR would involve a change usually, I think. GWR trains are often newer too.

Depends on your starting point in London really. If you're near Waterloo, SWR is convenient. Reliability is kinda hit or miss for both lately tbh, but I find GWR services to the West Country often feel a bit more modern. Check journey times for both, that's usually the decider.

can you use a student railcard on any ticket type or just specific ones?

C Cody Doyle 1 month ago
Pretty much all of them, except for some really cheap promotional fares sometimes. Off-peak and advance tickets definitely work with it.

D David J. 1 month ago
Yeah, you can use it on most tickets. Just remember it's 1/3 off, and sometimes there's a minimum fare restriction during peak hours, so it might not always apply then. But for off-peak and advance, it's golden.

Thinking of getting a season ticket for my commute, but worried about strikes. Do they offer refunds or anything if trains are cancelled a lot due to strikes?

M Marcus Lindqvist 2 months ago
I've heard they do some kind of compensation for season ticket holders during strikes, but it's not a full refund for the whole ticket. You'd have to look up their specific policy on that.

They have a Delay Repay scheme, so even if it's a strike, if your specific journey is delayed by enough time, you can usually claim for that. For season tickets, they sometimes do a different calculation for strike periods, but you'd need to check their site for the exact details for season ticket holders.

Hey, do you get free wifi on SWR trains? Or is it a paid thing?

M Marcus V. 1 month ago
Some of the newer trains have free wifi, but it can be a bit spotty. Don't rely on it for anything important.

It's hit or miss. On certain routes or newer trains, yes, it's free. But it's not on all of them, and even when it is, it's not always super fast. I usually download stuff before I travel just in case.
